Proteins.1 raises €4.7M to commercialise ultra-sensitive protein detection for early disease diagnosis

The company has developed a physics-based protein detection technology that it claims is up to 1,000 times more sensitive than current gold-standard platforms, enabling disease detection from minimal blood samples at the single-molecule level.

The core innovation replaces enzymatic signal amplification — the standard approach in protein diagnostics — with a magnetic cycling mechanism that repeatedly reads a single captured protein molecule, accumulating signal without increasing background noise.

Why now? PCR transformed genetic diagnostics by amplifying tiny amounts of DNA into detectable signals. No equivalent amplification method has existed for proteins — the molecules that often signal the earliest onset of cancer, neurodegeneration, and cardiovascular disease. Proteins.1 is attempting to close that gap, and the timing reflects both the maturity of the underlying photonics and semiconductor technology and a growing clinical and commercial push toward early disease detection.

The technology was first discovered at VTT in 2018, independently replicated through EU-funded research, and has received granted patents in both the US and Finland — a meaningful validation step for a pre-seed company.

What could go wrong? The company is starting with research-use-only applications before moving toward regulated clinical diagnostics — a path that is technically prudent but commercially long. Regulatory approval for diagnostic devices is expensive, slow, and uncertain, particularly for novel sensing approaches without an established clinical track record. The claim of 1,000 times greater sensitivity than incumbent platforms is striking but has not yet been validated in large-scale clinical studies.

The global diagnostics market is also dominated by well-capitalised incumbents with deep distribution and regulatory relationships that are difficult to displace.

The signal: Proteins.1 represents a category of deeptech spinout that Europe has historically struggled to commercialise at scale — fundamental science with genuine breakthrough potential, housed in a research institution for years before finding a path to market. The pre-seed raise, with backing from two experienced Finnish life sciences investors, is a first step toward changing that pattern. If the technology performs as described, the implications extend well beyond diagnostics: earlier detection of cancer and neurological disease at the molecular stage, years before symptoms appear, would represent a genuine shift in how medicine is practised.
