AI cow collar startup Halter in talks to raise at $2B+ valuation in a round led by Founders Fund

Why now? Halter's June 2025 round raised $100 million and was led by BOND. Since then, the Auckland-based company has opened a Colorado office and is prioritising US expansion — a market large enough to justify a significant valuation step-up. Founders Fund's interest signals that at least one high-profile deep tech investor sees Halter as a category-defining bet in precision agriculture.

The timing also reflects broader momentum in physical AI applications. As AI finds its way into industrial and agricultural settings, startups that have already achieved real-world deployment at scale — not just pilots — are attracting premium valuations.

What could go wrong? Agricultural technology has been a difficult category for venture capital. A wave of agtech companies have gone bankrupt in recent years as startups struggled with farmer adoption and high operational costs. Halter has navigated that landscape better than most, but scaling in the US — a vast, fragmented market with very different farming practices from New Zealand — is a substantial challenge.

The talks are ongoing and details could still change. With the round reportedly oversubscribed, the final valuation and size remain in flux, which introduces uncertainty about the deal's ultimate structure.

The signal: Halter's trajectory — from concept to $2 billion in a few years — reflects a growing conviction that precision agriculture is finally having its moment. The combination of cheap sensors, ubiquitous connectivity, and capable AI models has made it possible to manage livestock at scale in ways that were not economically viable before.

The virtual fence technology in particular reduces the need for physical fencing and human labour, two of the biggest cost drivers in cattle farming. If Halter can replicate its New Zealand success in the US, it would validate precision livestock management as a durable, scalable business — not just a promising idea.
