OpenAI acquires Python toolmaker Astral to build out Codex

Try Dealroom →, a startup behind three widely used open-source Python developer tools — uv, Ruff, and ty — to expand its AI coding platform, Codex. The deal will fold Astral's team into the Codex division. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Astral's tools handle dependency management, linting, and type checking, and are used by tens of millions of developers each month. Built in Rust, they are significantly faster than older Python-based alternatives.
Why now? AI coding assistants are booming, and OpenAI is in a direct race with AnthropicDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → — reportedly nearing a $20B annual revenue run rate — and Cursor, which is in talks to raise at a $50B valuation. Codex has already seen 3x user growth and 5x usage increase since the start of the year, with over two million weekly active users.

Sceptics also question whether Astral's tools will stay truly open-source, or gradually shift toward Codex lock-in.
Regulatory approval is required before the deal closes, leaving some uncertainty over timing and conditions.
The signal: This is a vertical integration play. By owning both the AI that writes code and the tools developers use to manage it, OpenAI is moving from coding assistant to full development platform. The acquisition underscores OpenAI's broader push toward "agentic" AI systems that can operate across entire workflows rather than perform isolated tasks.
The battle for the developer stack is intensifying. Whoever controls the toolchain — where code is written, checked, and shipped — controls a foundational layer of modern software development.
