Advanced Navigation raises $103M to expand GPS-alternative navigation globally

Why now? GPS vulnerabilities have moved from a technical nuisance to a strategic risk, particularly as autonomous systems proliferate in defence, mining, and maritime industries. Advanced Navigation recorded triple-digit growth last year, and the US and Europe — which together account for more than 80% of its revenue — are its two largest and fastest-growing markets.
The fresh capital will fund new positioning, navigation, and timing hubs in both regions, with engineering teams based closer to customers. The NRFC's involvement ensures the company retains its headquarters, core R&D, and manufacturing in Australia.
What could go wrong? Expanding into the US and European defence and infrastructure markets is capital-intensive and slow-moving, with long sales cycles and heavy regulatory scrutiny.
Acquisitions in robotics, photonics, and quantum sensing — all flagged as targets — add integration risk to an already ambitious growth plan.
The signal: Advanced Navigation's raise is the latest sign that GPS-alternative navigation is becoming critical infrastructure. As autonomous systems move into high-stakes environments — from conflict zones to deep-sea operations — redundant, AI-driven positioning is shifting from a nice-to-have to a necessity.
The NRFC's involvement also reflects a broader trend of governments using strategic capital to keep sovereign capabilities in key deep-tech sectors at home, even as the companies that house them scale globally.
