Palmer Luckey's ModRetro seeks $1B valuation ahead of N64 console launch
What's the deal? Palmer LuckeyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s retro gaming startup ModRetro is in early talks to raise funding at a $1 billion valuation, according to the Financial Times. The discussions come as the company prepares to ship its second product, the M64 — an FPGA-based Nintendo 64 clone that plays original cartridges at 4K resolution, priced at $199.
Why now? The M64 is close to launch, with mass production underway and a spring 2026 window expected. Raising capital now lets ModRetro fund manufacturing and marketing ahead of what it hopes will be a breakout product.
The timing is also opportune: rival AnalogueDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, whose 3D console launched in late 2025, has just raised its price from $250 to $270, citing tariffs — handing ModRetro a $70 price advantage at launch.
What could go wrong? ModRetro has just one product launch behind it. Justifying a $1 billion valuation on that track record is a tall order, especially in a niche market of enthusiast hardware buyers.
There is also the Luckey problem. His role as founder of defence contractor Anduril IndustriesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → is polarising: reviewers noted that the Chromatic, however well made, carried a reputation overhang. The M64 will face the same dynamic.
The signal: Retro gaming hardware has proven it can command real money — Analogue has built a cult following charging premium prices for FPGA-based consoles. But ModRetro is aiming at a valuation that implies far broader ambitions, perhaps a platform play rather than a hardware boutique.
Luckey's cross-industry profile — defence tech, VR, retro gaming — makes him an unusual founder to watch. If ModRetro can convert nostalgia into a scalable business, it would be a rare consumer hardware success story in an era dominated by software and AI.
