Chinese Moonshot seeks $10B valuation as AI funding pace accelerates

What's the deal? Moonshot AI, the Beijing-based startup behind the Kimi chatbot, is targeting a $10 billion valuation as it seeks additional funding in a round backed by Alibaba and Tencent. The talks began in late January, roughly a month after Moonshot raised $500 million at a $4.3 billion valuation.

Existing backers including Alibaba, Tencent, and 5Y Capital have committed more than $700 million to the first tranche of the latest round, according to people familiar with the matter.

Why now? The rapid fundraising reflects strong investor demand for Chinese startups building AI models to compete with OpenAI and AnthropicDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. Moonshot released in January Kimi K2.5, part of a broader wave of upgrades ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday.

The model is among the most-used on OpenRouter and ranks near the top of open-source benchmarks.

What could go wrong? Moonshot may not reach its $10 billion valuation goal, and even if it does, it would still trail rivals Zhipu and MiniMax, both valued above $29 billion after recent IPOs.

The company also lags those competitors in commercialisation, despite offering subscription tiers and enterprise services.

The signal: China’s AI sector is moving fast, with capital flowing to a small group of startups racing to build world-class models. Moonshot’s push highlights how quickly valuations can rise when technical gains and strategic competition converge.
