Hades raises €15 million to drill for Europe’s critical minerals and geothermal future

what’s the deal? German deep-tech startup Hades has secured €15 million in a seed round at a €67.5 million valuation to speed up development of its laser-based drilling and extraction systems for critical minerals and geothermal energy.  The company aims to make it faster and cheaper for Europe to access its own raw materials and energy resources rather than relying on imports.

why now? Europe’s dependence on imported critical minerals from China and other countries has come under sharper focus amid rising geopolitical tensions and global competition for resources. Policymakers in the EU and beyond are pushing for sovereign supply chains for tech metals and energy. Hades’ CEO Max WernerDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → said recent lab breakthroughs in rock penetration and energy delivery triggered the new capital raise.

what could go wrong? Extracting deep-earth resources remains technically challenging and capital intensive. Hades’ technology and operational build-out have yet to be proven at commercial scale, and its goal of an operational site by 2029 will require substantial further investment. Environmental concerns could also surface as deep drilling attracts scrutiny despite claims of lower impact than traditional methods.

the signal: The funding reflects mounting investor interest in the supply side of the energy transition and tech economy. Europe’s strategic push to secure domestic raw materials for electric vehicles, semiconductors and clean energy is creating room for startups tackling extraction bottlenecks. Hades’ raise also underscores a broader trend: venture capital is moving deeper into industrial tech that sits at the intersection of sustainability and geopolitical risk.
