Waymo nears $16B funding round at $110B valuation as robotaxi rollout scales

What’s the deal? Waymo is close to finalising a $16 billion funding round that would value Google’s self-driving car unit at about $110 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. Alphabet, Waymo’s parent company, is set to contribute more than three-quarters of the capital.

New investors in the round are expected to include Dragoneer, Sequoia Capital and DST Global, alongside existing backers such as Andreessen Horowitz and Abu Dhabi’s sovereign fund Mubadala. The round is said to be three times oversubscribed.

Why now? Waymo is ramping up its robotaxi operations across the US and expanding testing into international markets, including London and Tokyo.

The company says it has completed more than 20 million trips and expects to reach one million rides per week this year. Alphabet is raising fresh capital to support that rollout as competition in autonomous mobility intensifies.

What could go wrong? Autonomous driving remains capital intensive and heavily regulated, with safety under close scrutiny as deployments scale.

Waymo faces growing competition from Tesla, which is rolling out its own robotaxi service using a different technical approach, and from Chinese players such as Baidu's Apollo GoDealroom has a profile for this one. The signal: The size of the round highlights renewed investor confidence in autonomous mobility as the technology moves closer to large-scale commercial use.

A potential $110 billion valuation would place Waymo among the most valuable private technology companies, signalling that investors are backing a small group of leaders to dominate the next phase of transport.
