D-Wave Acquires Quantum Circuits for $550M to Expand Quantum Computing Capabilities

D-Wave Quantum has agreed to acquire Yale UniversityDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → spinout Quantum Circuits for $550 million in a mix of cash and stock, bringing together two distinct approaches to superconducting quantum computing.

Quantum Circuits was founded in 2015 by a team of academic researchers at Yale and focuses on gate-model superconducting quantum processors with hardware-level error detection, an approach aimed at improving scalability and reliability.

Quantum Circuits’ research team, including co-founder and Yale physicist Rob SchoelkopfDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, will join D-Wave and form part of a new research and development centre in New Haven, Connecticut.

Schoelkopf is a prominent figure in superconducting qubit research and has been closely associated with advances in hardware-level error correction.

Founded in 1999 and headquartered in Palo Alto, California, D-Wave is one of the longest-standing commercial quantum computing companies. It is best known for its quantum annealing systems used in optimisation problems and provides quantum computing access through cloud-based services for enterprise and research customers.

By combining its control software and cloud platform with Quantum Circuits’ hardware design, D-Wave aims to accelerate the development of commercially usable gate-model quantum computers, complementing its existing annealing systems.
