Photonic Secures $130M to Push Quantum Computing Toward Commercial Use

Photonic, a Canadian quantum computing company, has raised C$180 million (US$130 million) in the first close of a new funding round, as it moves to commercialise its technology.

The financing brings the company’s total capital raised to roughly US$271 million and ranks among the larger recent rounds in the quantum sector.

Founded in Vancouver, Photonic is developing a distributed quantum computing architecture based on silicon spin qubits connected through photonic links.

The company argues that this approach is better suited to large-scale systems, as it builds on established semiconductor manufacturing and fibre-optic networking, rather than relying on bespoke hardware.

The new capital will be used to expand engineering and commercial teams, advance product development, and deepen partnerships with customers in sectors such as finance, telecommunications and government.

Photonic has said it is now focused on moving from laboratory demonstrations to deployable systems, positioning itself as one of a small group of quantum companies claiming near-term commercial readiness.

While widespread commercial use remains some years away, investors are increasingly backing companies such as Photonic that combine novel architectures with clearer paths to scale and integration into existing infrastructure.
