Try Dealroom → has raised $20 billion in an upsized Series E funding round, exceeding an initial target of $15 billion and potentially valuing the company at more than $230 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. xAI has not confirmed a valuation.

Founded in 2023, xAI is developing large language models under the Grok brand and is currently training its next-generation model, Grok 5, which the company has said will be released early this year.

In a post on X in October, Musk said the model had a 10 per cent chance of reaching artificial general intelligence, a benchmark commonly defined as the ability to perform tasks at a human level.

xAI said the new capital would be used to expand computing infrastructure, accelerate the development and deployment of AI products, and fund further research.

The company has rapidly expanded its data-centre footprint in recent months as it seeks to narrow the gap with rivals such as OpenAI and Google, both of which have already deployed widely used consumer and enterprise AI systems.

The fundraising underscores the continued appetite among investors for large-scale AI bets, even as concerns grow around valuation levels and the rising cost of training and running advanced models.

Capital intensity has become a defining feature of the sector, with access to compute increasingly shaping competitive advantage.

The Series E round brings xAI’s total funding to more than $40 billion. The company’s pace of capital raising highlights how scale, infrastructure and speed have become central to the contest among a small group of companies building foundational AI models.
