Anthropic to Buy Nearly 1M TPUv7 Chips for Its Own Data Centers

Anthropic is taking a more direct approach to building the infrastructure behind its AI models. Instead of relying only on large cloud providers, the company plans to buy close to one million TPU v7 chips directly from Broadcom and deploy them in facilities it controls. This move gives Anthropic ownership of the hardware that powers its systems, a step that reflects how large AI developers are rethinking access to compute as demand continues to grow.

Under this setup, Anthropic is not building everything alone. Companies such as TeraWulf, Hut 8, and Cipher MiningDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → will provide the physical data center infrastructure, including power and cooling. Fluidstack will handle the on-site deployment work, such as installing servers, cabling, testing the hardware, and maintaining day-to-day physical operations. In practice, Anthropic keeps control over the chips and capacity, while outsourcing the physical running of the facilities to specialized partners.

The arrangement highlights a broader shift in the AI industry. As competition for compute intensifies, leading AI labs are looking for ways to secure long-term capacity, manage costs, and reduce dependence on traditional cloud platforms. By combining owned hardware with outsourced operations, Anthropic is adopting a hybrid model that sits between cloud computing and fully self-built infrastructure—one that could become more common as AI workloads continue to scale.
