Chinese Commercial Autonomous Vehicle Developer CiDi Goes Public at $1.4B Valuation

CiDi, a Chinese developer of autonomous driving technology for commercial vehicles, has raised $180 million (HK$1.4 billion) in its initial public offering in Hong Kong, valuing the company at around $1.5 billion (HK$11.5 billion). The listing marks one of the first public debuts by a specialist in industrial autonomous systems in recent years.

Founded in 2017, CiDi develops software and systems that enable vehicles to operate autonomously in controlled environments such as mining sites, logistics parks and ports. Its technology combines perception, vehicle control and connectivity, allowing trucks and other commercial vehicles to operate with limited or no human intervention in areas where routes and conditions are predictable.

Unlike consumer-focused self-driving companies, CiDi has concentrated on sectors where automation can already be deployed at scale. Mining and industrial logistics, in particular, have been early adopters, using autonomous vehicles to improve safety, address labour shortages and reduce operating costs in hazardous or remote locations.

CiDi’s Hong Kong listing follows a previous attempt to go public in 2024 that did not proceed. The successful IPO comes as the city seeks to attract more technology companies working on advanced hardware and software, particularly those in areas such as automation and robotics.

Proceeds from the offering will be used to support research and development, expand commercial deployments of its systems and grow the business in domestic and selected international markets. Demand for autonomous solutions in industrial settings is being driven by labour shortages and the desire for more efficient operations.
