The new capital will primarily support Cape Station in Utah—a 500 MW-plus development that is expected to become the world’s largest next-generation geothermal project—as well as a pipeline of early-stage sites across the western United States, where Fervo has secured more than 500,000 acres of geothermal rights. Cape Station is designed to deliver 24/7 carbon-free electricity to the grid by the latter half of this decade, making it an attractive solution for power-hungry data centers, EV charging and industrial loads that can’t rely solely on intermittent wind and solar. Google, already a long-standing offtake partner through the Project Red plant in Nevada, is deepening the relationship by coming in as an equity investor in the Series E.
Fervo’s technology adapts drilling and fracking techniques from the oil and gas sector—horizontal drilling, multi-stage stimulation and advanced reservoir modeling—to create engineered geothermal systems in hot dry rock. By circulating water through fractured granite two miles below the surface and running the resulting heat through power plants, Fervo can produce dispatchable, zero-emission electricity around the clock. That “clean, firm” profile fills a crucial gap in the energy transition, complementing wind and solar and aligning closely with corporate buyers’ 24/7 carbon-free energy goals. The company positions itself not just as a project developer but as a platform marrying geoscience, drilling innovation and real-time data analytics to scale geothermal in regions previously considered uneconomic.
With the Series E in place, Fervo is leaning into a moment of growing urgency around grid capacity, particularly from AI and cloud data centers that demand constant power. Management and investors see the company as one of the few clean-energy players with a credible path to multi-gigawatt, near-term additions of firm capacity in the U.S., and reports suggest Fervo is exploring an IPO as early as 2026.
