U2V Raises €60 Million to Back European University Spinouts
University2Ventures has completed the first close of its €60 million Fund I, a vehicle dedicated to supporting deep-tech startups emerging from Europe’s universities and research institutes.
U2V is the new name for Earlybird-X, the pre-seed deep-tech fund formerly within Earlybird Venture Capital. The rebrand reflects a clearer focus on commercialising university research, with partners Philipp SemmerDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Michael SchmittDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → continuing to lead the effort.
The first close was backed by a mix of corporate and private investors, including anchor limited partner JungheinrichDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → via Uplift VenturesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, alongside family offices, serial entrepreneurs and industry executives. The fund is designed to invest at the earliest stages, helping academic founders translate technical research into commercially viable companies.
The launch of Fund I comes at a time of sustained momentum in Europe’s spinout ecosystem. Recent Dealroom.co data shows that the combined enterprise value of spinouts from European universities and research centres has reached nearly $400 billion — a 25% increase since 2021.
This growth reflects a decade of strengthening tech-transfer capabilities, rising investor interest in research-backed innovation and a broader recognition of universities as engines of deep-tech company creation.
U2V positions itself as a specialised partner within this landscape, aiming to address the structural financing needs of university spinouts, which often require longer development timelines and sector-specific expertise.
The fund will focus on areas such as advanced engineering, life sciences and other research-intensive fields where strong intellectual property underpins commercial potential. Beyond capital, U2V intends to support founders with operational guidance and access to industrial networks that can help accelerate early technical and commercial validation.
By completing the first close of its fund, U2V adds to a growing roster of investment vehicles dedicated to Europe’s academic innovators. The initiative underscores confidence in the region’s ability to generate competitive deep-tech companies and highlights the increasing role of specialised funds in bridging the gap between scientific discovery and market deployment.
