SmartHR Secures $96M Major Growth Investment as General Atlantic Enters Japan

SmartHR has received a $96 million (¥14.6 billion) strategic investment from General Atlantic, marking the U.S. growth-equity firm’s first deal in Japan and the largest secondary transaction involving a Japanese startup to date. The stake was acquired from early investor Coral CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, which retains about half of its original holding.

The Tokyo-based HR software provider, founded in 2013, has become one of Japan’s few unicorns , offering cloud-based tools for labour management, onboarding and HR workflows. The partnership will support further product development, expansion of customer services and selective acquisitions.

For General Atlantic, the deal reflects growing confidence in Japan’s startup ecosystem. The firm has spent two years meeting more than 100 Japanese companies and sees rising entrepreneurial ambition in sectors such as software, robotics and AI. It expects to make two to three additional investments in the country over the next few years before considering a local office.

The investment is also notable in a market where secondary transactions remain uncommon. Coral Capital said the deal generated a six-fold return . General Atlantic’s involvement is expected to extend SmartHR’s timeline to an eventual IPO, likely pushing any listing to 2027 or later as the company focuses on scaling as a private business.
