Backed VC Raises $100M Seed Fund Focused on Frontier Tech

London-based Backed VC has closed a $100 million third seed fund , its largest to date, to invest in early-stage European founders building globally ambitious technology companies. The fund follows a secondary sale of stakes in the firm’s first fund, which allowed some limited partners to realise early returns amid a slow exit market.

The firm’s new vehicle will target three areas of emerging technology: AI-native therapeutics , blockchain and banking infrastructure , and manufacturing automation .

The firm’s backers include institutional investors such as Isomer Capital and Wunderland CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Around 95% of investors from Backed’s first fund also committed to the latest vehicle—a sign of confidence amid what de Haes described as a “challenging” fundraising environment for venture capital.

Backed has invested in more than 100 startups since its inception, including 6 unicorns , such as  Thought Machine  and Invisible Technologies. The firm says its first €50 million fund ranks among the top-performing European seed funds of its vintage.

Backed is also expanding its footprint internationally, with plans to open a U.S. office to help European portfolio companies access American capital and talent . “We’re still backing European founders,” said Brunicki, “but we want to make sure they can build in the markets where they have the greatest potential to succeed.”
