Commonware raises $25M from Stripe-backed Tempo to power next-gen blockchain payments
Commonware, a crypto infrastructure startup founded by Patrick O’Grady, has raised $25 million in a strategic round led by Tempo — the payments-focused blockchain incubated by Stripe and Paradigm. The partnership marks Tempo’s first investment and positions Commonware at the center of one of the most ambitious pushes yet to modernize blockchain-based payment systems.
The deal extends beyond capital. Tempo will integrate Commonware’s open-source framework , known as the Commonware Library , and join as a core contributor to its ongoing development. Together, the two companies aim to accelerate the creation of faster, more reliable blockchain payment rails — addressing a challenge that has long limited the industry’s mainstream adoption.
Founded in 2024 , Commonware builds open-source tools that allow developers to launch and customize blockchains with minimal friction. Despite operating with a seven-person team , the company is already profitable , generating over $1 million in annual revenue per enterprise client . Its new valuation marks a sharp rise from the $63 million recorded in its seed round, according to PitchBook.
The investment comes amid growing institutional interest in blockchain infrastructure, as projects like Tempo aim to merge fintech-grade reliability with crypto-native innovation. With its tools now embedded in Tempo’s payment architecture, Commonware is emerging as a key enabler of the next wave of blockchain-powered financial systems — where open-source collaboration meets enterprise-scale utility.
