Q.ANT secures $80M to push Europe to the forefront of photonic computing

Backed by Cherry Ventures, UVC Partners, imec.xpand, and others, the company is positioning itself at the intersection of AI, energy efficiency, and semiconductor innovation .

The idea behind Q.ANT is deceptively simple: instead of using electrons to process information, use photons — particles of light that can perform computations faster, cooler, and with far less power. The company’s processors, built on thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN), perform complex mathematical operations natively in light. Where a traditional GPU might rely on thousands of transistors to complete an operation, Q.ANT’s photonic processor can do it with a single optical element.

The implications are enormous. As data centres struggle under the weight of AI workloads — some projected to consume up to 17% of U.S. electricity by 2030 — Q.ANT offers an alternative that could cut power consumption by up to 90× . Its servers require no water cooling, fit into existing infrastructure, and are manufactured on a repurposed 1990s CMOS line in Germany, giving the company a practical edge in scalability and cost.

Unlike many of its global peers, which remain in the research phase, Q.ANT is already shipping commercial photonic co-processors that integrate directly into modern data centres. The company’s next chapter involves expanding production capacity in Stuttgart, scaling operations in the U.S., and refining its “Native Processing Server” platform — a system designed to handle half of today’s AI workloads faster and more efficiently than traditional chips.

Q.ANT represents a broader shift in Europe’s deep-tech landscape — a bet that the continent can lead not just in AI software, but in the physical hardware that will make the next era of AI possible. In an industry dominated by American GPU giants, Q.ANT’s vision of light-based, sustainable computing might be Europe’s most audacious move yet.
