Scale AI challenger Micro1 raises $35M and hits $500M valuation
Micro1, a young startup that connects AI labs with human contractors for data labeling and training, is emerging as a challenger in a sector once dominated by Scale AI. The company recently secured a $35 million Series A round at a $500 million valuation, led by 01 Advisors.
The startup is targeting a shift in how AI companies source data. Instead of relying on large pools of low-cost contractors, many labs now want domain experts — from software engineers to doctors — who can provide higher-quality annotations and inputs. To meet this demand, Micro1 developed its AI recruiter, Zara, which screens and vets candidates. Thousands of professionals, including academics from top universities, have joined the platform, with more added each week.
CEO Ali Ansari says the company has been expanding quickly, with annual recurring revenue climbing from $7 million at the start of 2025 to $50 million within the same year. While competitors such as Mercor and Surge still generate significantly higher revenue, Micro1 is growing into a niche defined by expertise and quality.
The broader market for training data is also shifting toward “environments” — simulated spaces where AI agents can learn by performing tasks. Micro1 is investing in this area as part of its long-term strategy, betting that the next phase of AI development will require more than traditional labeling.
With AI labs often working with multiple data providers, no single player can fully dominate the space. That fragmentation creates opportunities for newer entrants like Micro1 to secure a role in the evolving ecosystem.
