Indian Deep-Tech Startup Offgrid Energy Labs Raises US$15 Million for ZincGel Battery Expansion
Offgrid Energy Labs, a battery technology startup based in Noida, India, has raised US$15 million in a Series A round to accelerate the commercialization of its zinc-based energy storage systems. The round was led by Archean Chemical Industries, with participation from Ankur Capital, which had previously backed the company. The fresh capital will allow Offgrid to scale production and take its proprietary ZincGel technology closer to market.
Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, Offgrid’s ZincGel solution is designed specifically for stationary energy storage. It offers long discharge cycles of six to twelve hours, relies on abundant and non-toxic materials, and carries a lower risk of fire. The company has built a strong intellectual property portfolio around the technology, positioning it as a safer and more sustainable alternative for storing renewable energy at scale.
With this investment, Offgrid plans to build a 10 MWh demonstration facility in the UK, expected to be operational by early 2026, while laying the groundwork for a future gigafactory in India. Founded in 2018 by researchers from IIT Kanpur, the company is part of a new wave of Indian deep-tech startups seeking to solve global energy challenges with homegrown innovation.
