Onera Health is a Dutch med-tech company transforming sleep diagnostics with its polysomnography (PSG) solutions. Founded in 2017 as a spin-off from the nanoelectronics and digital technology research center imec, the company aims to make clinical-grade sleep studies more accessible, convenient, and user-friendly. The founders include Ruben de Francisco (CEO) and Hartmut Schneider (CMO).

The company has developed the Onera Sleep Test System (STS), a patch-based, wireless sensor system that allows patients to conduct comprehensive sleep studies in the comfort of their own homes rather than in a traditional, and often uncomfortable, sleep lab. This system records multiple physiological signals, including brain, respiratory, and cardiac functions, matching the clinical accuracy of in-lab PSG tests, which are considered the gold standard for diagnosing sleep disorders like sleep apnea and insomnia. The self-applied patches are designed for ease of use, with a setup time of less than five minutes, and the data is sent to a cloud-based platform where clinicians can remotely monitor, analyze, and diagnose patients.

Onera operates on a B2B2C model, primarily selling its remote sleep-monitoring and diagnostic tools to public and private healthcare providers, such as sleep clinics and hospitals. Its business model includes a Polysomnography-as-a-Service (PSGaaS) offering, combining the hardware with the Onera Digital Health Platform, which enables sleep studies to be conducted with minimal upfront investment for the provider. The company has received CE marking in Europe and 510(k) clearance from the FDA in the United States, allowing for commercialization in these key markets. As of January 2024, Onera had raised over €55 million in total funding, with a significant €30 million Series C round intended to accelerate manufacturing, support expansion in the US and Europe, and fund further R&D.
