Acurable

Acurable is a medical device company with offices in London and Seville that develops wearable sensors for at-home medical diagnosis. The company was founded in 2016 by Professor Esther Rodriguez-Villegas, Emilio Sanz Pereiras, and Dr. Anas Imtiaz, spinning out of Imperial College London.

The founding technology was the result of over a decade of research led by Professor Rodriguez-Villegas at the university's Wearable Technologies Lab. The initial research, which started in 2004, was prompted by a request to develop an apnoea monitoring technology to help prevent Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP). This led to a multidisciplinary research journey that uncovered solutions for broader respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Professor Rodriguez-Villegas, a Spanish engineer and inventor, is a Professor of Low Power Electronics at Imperial College London and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Acurable's core technology, AcuPebble, uses non-invasive acoustic sensors that are worn on the neck to record physiological sounds like breathing and cardiac functions. These signals are sent to a mobile device and then to the cloud, where proprietary algorithms analyze the data to extract key diagnostic parameters, automating the analysis and providing instant results for clinicians. This process aims to reduce clinician workload and allow for remote patient monitoring.

The company's first product, AcuPebble SA100, is designed for the automated diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). It received a CE mark in Europe in 2020 and 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2021. Acurable operates on both a service license model, where it manages the diagnostic process, and a product license model, where healthcare providers like the NHS manage it themselves. The company's clients are healthcare organizations and its devices are used in clinical trials. Acurable has raised funds through various rounds, including a seed round in 2017 and a Series A round of €11 million in 2022, led by Kibo Ventures.
