MACOM

Semiconductors · Lowell, United States · Founded 1950

Leading supplier of high performance RF, microwave, millimeterwave and photonic semiconductor products MoreLess

In 1950, four engineers—Vessarios Chigas, Louis Roberts, Hugh Wainwright, and Richard M. Walker—started a company called Microwave Associates. Their initial focus was supplying magnetrons, a critical component for radar systems, to the U.S. Army Signal Corps. This defense-oriented beginning laid the groundwork for a decades-long journey in high-performance electronics. As the world of communications evolved, so did the company. In 1978, it rebranded to M/A-COM to signify its expansion beyond microwave components and into the broader telecommunications industry. The company's life took a significant turn in the 1990s when it was acquired by AMP and subsequently became part of Tyco Electronics. A pivotal moment arrived in 2009 when the commercial business was divested and acquired by John Ocampo, an industry veteran who had previously co-founded Sirenza Microdevices. This transaction set the stage for a new era of focused growth. This renewed focus culminated on March 15, 2012, when MACOM completed its Initial Public Offering on the NASDAQ stock exchange, trading under the ticker MTSI. The IPO provided capital to fuel an aggressive strategy of expansion through acquisition. Over the following years, MACOM acquired numerous companies, bolstering its expertise in technologies essential for data centers, 5G infrastructure, and defense applications. Today, MACOM stands as a key supplier of the high-performance semiconductor building blocks that power modern communication and defense systems.
