Nitronex

Nitronex, founded in 1999 by Warren Weeks and other graduates from North Carolina State University's wide bandgap program, carved a niche in the semiconductor industry by specializing in gallium nitride-on-silicon (GaN-on-Si) RF power devices. The company's core offering revolved around its proprietary SIGANTIC® manufacturing process, which combined the high performance of GaN with the cost-effectiveness and scalability of silicon substrates. This enabled the development of RF power transistors and monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) that delivered high linearity, output power, and efficiency.

The company's products were designed for demanding, high-bandwidth applications across various sectors. Clients included entities in the defense, communications, cable TV, wireless infrastructure, radar, and industrial and scientific markets. Nitronex's business model focused on both the sale of discrete devices and MMICs, as well as providing foundry services for strategic partners. A significant milestone was achieved in September 2003, when the company was issued a key US patent for its process technology for growing GaN semiconductor layers on silicon substrates. Over its history, Nitronex successfully raised $116 million in funding over 30 rounds from investors such as VantagePoint Capital Partners and TPG.

The company's trajectory culminated in its acquisition by M/A-COM Technology Solutions (MACOM) on February 13, 2014, for approximately $26 million in cash. Prior to the MACOM acquisition, Nitronex had been acquired by GaAs Labs, LLC in July 2012. The acquisition by MACOM was a strategic move to integrate Nitronex's GaN-on-Silicon technology and expertise into MACOM's broader portfolio, aiming to accelerate the mainstream adoption of GaN technology in RF and microwave applications.
