About Bravo Wellness

Founded in 2008 by Jim Pshock, Bravo Wellness established itself as a data-driven provider of employee wellness solutions. Pshock, leveraging over two decades of experience in the insurance industry, identified a significant opportunity to address rising healthcare costs by focusing on preventable, lifestyle-influenced health issues. The company was born after his business plan was initially rejected by a former employer, prompting him to launch the venture independently. From its origins as a two-person startup in Avon, Ohio, Bravo grew to serve over two million participants and 11,000 employers nationally with a team of over 170 employees.

Bravo's core business centered on designing, consulting on, and administering configurable wellness programs for employers and health plans. The company's business model was rooted in an achievement-based incentive system that linked employee progress in health goals to tangible rewards, such as lower insurance premiums. This approach was designed to motivate employees to reduce preventable health risks, thereby lowering healthcare claims costs for employers. Bravo's services included biometric screenings, health risk assessments, wellness coaching, and incentive tracking, all managed through a proprietary technology platform. This platform used biometric data like smoking habits and blood glucose to create personalized improvement goals.

A significant milestone in the company's history was a Series A funding round in August 2014, where it raised $22 million from ABS Capital. This investment fueled its national expansion. The firm continued to grow, eventually being recognized as a leader in population health management. In January 2020, Bravo Wellness was acquired by Medical Mutual, one of Ohio's largest health insurers. The acquisition was a strategic move for Medical Mutual to enhance its wellness capabilities and population health strategy. Bravo began operating as a wholly owned subsidiary, with Jim Pshock continuing to lead the company post-acquisition. The deal was not initially sought by Bravo but arose when Medical Mutual needed to replace its existing wellness partner and saw Bravo's model as a strong strategic fit.
