State of AI in The Netherlands

Produced in partnership with Prosus and Techleap.nl, this report focuses on one of the most dense AI talent hubs in Europe, and what The Netherlands needs to do to chart its own course to thrive in this new era of AI.

Key findings

• The Netherlands holds 8% of Europe's AI talent pool while having 2.8% of its population, the densest AI talent pool among Europe's 15 biggest hubs.
• Among the 100 Dutch companies with the most AI talent, 70% of practitioners sit in old-economy or government roles and 32% at tech-native companies.
• Only 43% of Dutch respondents use AI at least every few months, the lowest of the 20 countries charted from KPMG's global study.
• The Netherlands has 618 AI startups, 36 per million people against a European average of 12.
• Amsterdam ranks 6th for AI startup capital in 2021-24 but 18th for scaleup capital, with $515M raised in rounds above $100M.
