Ronald Hans Announces Boomerang, a File-Sharing Alternative to WeTransfer
More than a decade after co-founding WeTransfer, Ronald Hans — better known as Nalden — is returning to the file-sharing space with a new platform called BoomerangDealroom has a profile for this one. Hans, who helped launch WeTransfer in 2009 alongside Bas Beerens and Rinke Visser, has publicly criticized the Italian tech investor’s recent decisions. Since acquiring WeTransfer in 2023, Bending Spoons has overseen a major round of layoffs and introduced new terms of service that allow the company to commercially exploit users' uploaded files. The changes sparked backlash from users and privacy advocates, with Hans describing the policy update as “a slap in the face.”
In response, Hans revealed that he has been quietly developing Boomerang since January 2024. While the platform hasn’t launched yet, it’s accepting early sign-ups and is positioned as a creative-friendly alternative to existing file-sharing tools. According to Hans, Boomerang is built to “promote creativity, rather than exploit it” — a clear nod to the original values of WeTransfer.
Boomerang enters a market now more crowded and competitive than when WeTransfer first launched, but Nalden’s reputation in the space and the timing of user concerns may help the new platform gain traction.
