Candela Secures Major Electric Ferry Deal in Mumbai

Swedish startup Candela has secured its largest commercial order to date, agreeing to deliver 11 of its P-12 electric ferries to India-based operator JalVimanaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.

The deal forms part of Mumbai’s broader effort to introduce electric water transport as a response to road congestion and air pollution.

The 30-seater P-12 uses hydrofoil technology to lift the vessel above the water, significantly reducing drag and cutting energy consumption by up to 80% compared to conventional high-speed craft.

The ferries will initially serve routes between the Gateway of India and both Alibaug and Elephanta Island, reducing journeys that can take over an hour by car or bus to under 20 minutes on water.

The agreement follows Maharashtra’s plan to develop what it claims will be the world’s largest electric waterborne public transport network, eventually encompassing thousands of electric ferries.

Founded in 2014, Candela has previously delivered vessels for public use in Stockholm and has orders from cities and projects in Saudi Arabia, Germany, New Zealand, and the United States.

The Mumbai contract signals a notable expansion into large-scale urban infrastructure, underlining growing international interest in electric marine mobility.
