Chess.com Reaches 200 Million Users with a Fully Remote Global Team

In April 2025, Chess.com reached a milestone of over 200 million registered members, cementing its position as the world’s largest online chess platform.

The company now hosts more than 10 million games daily and has seen its user base triple since 2019, with 85% of new registrations coming from outside the United States.

Chess.com’s growth accelerated during the pandemic and following the release of Netflix's “The Queen’s Gambit,” and continues to be driven by product innovation, including AI-powered game analysis and interactive lessons. This user growth has translated into significant revenue.

In 2022, Chess.com generated over $100 million, and recent estimates suggest annual revenue has reached $500 million. The company operates on a freemium model, with 1.5 million paying subscribers accessing premium features and exclusive content.

Chess.com’s operations are entirely remote, with no physical offices. The team has expanded from 200 to over 700 employees across more than 60 countries since 2019. This remote structure is integral to the company’s culture and has enabled rapid scaling while minimising overhead costs.
