IXI: Reinventing Eyewear with Autofocus Glasses

IXI, a Finnish startup, is shaking up the centuries-old eyewear industry with a groundbreaking product: glasses that use eye-tracking and autofocus lenses to adjust vision in real time. Unlike bifocals or progressive lenses, IXI’s glasses sense where you're looking and change focus instantly—no bulky tech, no compromise on style.

Founded by Nokia AR veteran Niko Eiden and hacker-turned-graphics pioneer Ville “Wili” Miettinen, IXI brings hardcore engineering to a $200B market long dominated by legacy players like EssilorLuxottica. The team has filed over 150 patents, miniaturized sensors beyond what’s in Apple Vision Pro, and used smart software to overcome hardware limits.

IXI’s roots are deep in VR and optics (Eiden co-created Hololens’ precursor; Wili sold his graphics startup to NVIDIA). But instead of chasing hype, they’re solving real vision problems faced by 2.2 billion people globally.

From hacking faulty Chinese cleanroom doors to laser-cutting custom lenses, IXI combines elite know-how with scrappy execution. It’s not just a tech leap—it’s a reset for a European industry with untapped potential.
