World Economic Forum Enters New Chapter with Leadership Transition
On April 21, 2025, Klaus Schwab , the founder and long-serving chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF) , announced his resignation after more than five decades of leadership. Schwab’s departure marked the end of an era for the organization he helped build from its inception in 1971, transforming it into a global platform for high-level dialogue on pressing issues. His leadership has been a defining force in shaping the WEF’s role in connecting leaders from various sectors and industries worldwide.
The WEF Board of Trustees accepted Schwab’s resignation during an extraordinary meeting and appointed Peter Brabeck-Letmathe , former CEO and Chairman of Nestlé, as interim Chairman. Brabeck-Letmathe, with his extensive global leadership experience, steps into the role at a crucial time, ensuring continuity while the search for Schwab’s permanent successor begins. His appointment reflects the WEF’s ongoing commitment to its mission of fostering public-private collaboration and addressing global challenges.
As interim Chairman, Brabeck-Letmathe will guide the forum through a period of transition, overseeing its operations and maintaining its influential role in driving global economic, sustainability, and social agendas. Schwab’s resignation, while marking a significant shift for the organization, is viewed as part of the WEF’s natural evolution, as it adapts to an ever-changing global landscape.
Looking ahead, the WEF will face the challenge of preserving its relevance and influence as it navigates new global dynamics. With Brabeck-Letmathe at the helm during this transitional phase, the future direction of the forum remains uncertain but full of potential, as Schwab’s legacy continues to impact the organization’s future path.
