Pioneering Brain-Inspired AI, Microsoft partnership

Inait is a Swiss startup founded in 2018 by neuroscientist Henry Markram, Kamila Markram, and investor Steve Koltes that's taking a fundamentally different approach to AI development. Unlike companies building large language models, Inait creates "digital brains" based on neuroscience research and mammalian brain simulations.

The company's technology builds upon 20 years of Swiss government-funded brain research led by Markram, which developed 18 million lines of code for generating biologically accurate digital brain replicas. Their approach enables AI to learn from real-world experiences rather than just identifying patterns in pre-existing data, potentially offering more energy-efficient models that learn faster than current deep reinforcement learning systems.

Microsoft's March 2025 partnership with Inait aims to incorporate this brain-inspired technology into Microsoft's AI offerings, with applications in financial trading algorithms, risk management, personalized advice, and adaptive industrial robotics. This collaboration represents a strategic shift toward developing systems with more human-like reasoning capabilities and moves closer to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

As Inait CEO Richard Frey stated in the Financial Times, their founding principle is that "the only proven form of intelligence is in the brain and if we could master the brain, then we could do a very different, very powerful, novel kind of AI."
