The Tycoon Behind GlobalData and Wigan’s Rise

Low-profile British billionaire is known for his strategic investments across data, media, and sport. Despite his wealth and influence, he’s famously understated — described by his finance chief Simon Pyper as “the most unassuming billionaire.”

Danson made his fortune by founding Datamonitor (sold for £502M) and later GlobalData , which he’s actively growing into a Bloomberg challenger. Through aggressive acquisitions and data consolidation, GlobalData now spans multiple sectors including healthcare, energy, and financial services — mirroring Bloomberg’s model of combining news, data, and analytics in a subscription-based ecosystem.

He also owns several major media assets including the New Statesman and Press Gazette , reinforcing his influence in UK journalism and policy circles.

Outside of business, Danson owns Wigan Warriors , the rugby league club that topped the league last year. After their championship win, he was reluctantly convinced by CEO Kris Radlinski to walk through a cheering crowd — a rare public appearance for someone who once quietly lived in Michael Jackson’s former New York mansion. While originally from Wigan, decades in London have softened his northern accent.

With recent moves like acquiring Wigan Athletic FC and investing further into GlobalData ahead of its main market listing, Danson continues to build a quietly powerful empire — with Bloomberg in his sights.
