Lilium's Second Insolvency Filing
In February 2025, Lilium, the German eVTOL developer, has filed for insolvency for the second time in recent months. This move follows a failed attempt to secure a critical €200 million funding package from investors, including Slovakian entrepreneur Marian BočekDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, founder of InoBat.
The company's financial woes began in October 2024 when its German subsidiaries filed for self-administration due to blocked government guarantees and insufficient funding. Despite a brief recovery after securing an emergency investment deal in December 2024, Lilium's financial situation deteriorated as promised funds failed to materialize.
Lilium's collapse reflects broader challenges in the European eVTOL sector, where companies like Volocopter are also facing financial difficulties. Unlike their U.S. counterparts, such as Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation, which have secured substantial funding and regulatory approvals, European eVTOL startups struggle with capital constraints and regulatory hurdles.
The insolvency filing has halted operations, leaving over 700 employees without jobs and casting doubt on the fate of Lilium's 780 aircraft orders. The company's failure highlights the need for sustained investment and strategic management in the eVTOL industry, where only well-funded companies are likely to survive the development phase.
