General Catalyst Explores IPO Amid Expansion
General Catalyst is exploring a potential IPO, which would make it the first U.S. venture capital firm to go public, nearly two decades after Blackstonepaved the way for private equity. Though still early, the firm is rapidly expanding to build a diversified, fee-generating asset base similar to Blackstone.
To attract Wall Street, it has broadened beyond venture capital, acquiring a hospital, launching a wealth management business, forming a tech advisory unit, and raising $8 billion in new funds. This marks its shift from a firm to a company.
While firms like Andreessen Horowitz have been rumored to consider IPOs, General Catalyst seems further along. With fewer VC-backed startups going public, the firm itself could be an alternative.
