Hypercar builder founded by Christian von Koenigsegg

Koenigsegg is a prestigious Swedish hypercar manufacturer founded by Christian von Koenigsegg, who remains the majority owner of the company. Despite having no prior experience in car manufacturing, von Koenigsegg set out to create some of the world's finest sports cars. The company has maintained this vision for 30 years, establishing itself as a leader in the supercar world through innovative technology and cutting-edge design.

What makes Koenigsegg particularly special is its commitment to in-house manufacturing in Sweden, unlike many other car brands that rely on international subcontractors. The company currently operates from a former military base in Ängelholm, which provides them with ample space for manufacturing and testing, including a 165-foot-wide runway for customers arriving in private jets. Interestingly, they pay homage to the base's history by incorporating a ghost symbol above their cars' engine bays, referencing the World War II-era "Ghost Squadron" that once occupied the facility.

In terms of ownership, while von Koenigsegg maintains majority control, the company has seen some strategic investments. In October 2024, New York-based Chieftain Capital Management acquired a stake of less than 10% with a $51.4 million investment. This followed the end of a previous partnership with National Electric Vehicle Sweden, which had purchased a fifth of the company in 2019 but ended in 2023 when its parent company collapsed.

Koenigsegg is known for its extensive use of carbon fiber in vehicle construction, allowing for lightweight yet powerful builds that consistently push the boundaries of automotive performance and innovation.
