ARENA launches A$30M fund for early-stage clean energy startups

What's the deal? The Australian Renewable Energy AgencyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has launched Launchpad, a A$30 million (about $21 million) program to fund early-stage clean energy startups and the ecosystem that supports them. It targets local companies building technologies that lower emissions and speed Australia's energy transition.

How it works: Launchpad splits into two A$15 million streams. A competitive startup round backs pre-seed to seed-stage companies with grants of $500,000, rising to $1,000,000 for capital-intensive projects.

The second stream funds ecosystem partners such as accelerators, with grants of up to A$5 million through an open, non-competitive round for multi-year programs.

Why now? ARENA says early-stage funding is hard to secure for technologies that need time and capital, leaving a gap that stalls promising ideas.

"Australia has no shortage of talented founders and ambitious ideas, but early-stage funding can be difficult to secure for technologies that take time and capital to develop, particularly for energy and climate startups," chief executive officer Darren Miller said.

What's the endgame? The startup round is expected to support between 15 and 30 companies, all of which must show their innovation aligns with ARENA's strategic priorities. The aim is to help founders reach their next technical or commercial milestone and move toward commercialisation.

The timeline: Applications for the startup round close in late October 2026. The ecosystem stream stays open until the funding is exhausted.

The signal: Public capital is stepping in where private investors hesitate, targeting the slow, capital-heavy climate technologies that often struggle to clear the early-stage funding gap.
