Oxford spin-off Alloyed 3D-prints low-cost jet engines for drone interceptors

What's the deal? Oxford spin-off Alloyed has developed low-cost turbojet engines with the UK Ministry of Defence — digitally designed and 3D-printed from powdered metal alloys — to power drones and potentially larger aircraft, the Financial Times reports. The push is Europe’s race to field jet-powered interceptors against Russia’s high-speed Geran drones.

Why now? CEO Michael Holmes says allies need jet turbines to shoot those systems down, and that Alloyed is in touch with “most” well-known drone, missile and interceptor companies. A smaller engine is already in UK serial production; a larger one went from concept to flight-ready in under seven months.
