Abstract hires first revenue chief after $25M raise at 3x valuation
What's the deal? Cybersecurity startup Abstract has named Jonathan Eller as its first chief revenue officer, following a $25 million funding round completed in July. Eller will oversee global sales, channel partnerships, customer success, and revenue operations, reporting to co-founder and chief executive officer Colby DeRodeff.
Who is Eller? He joins from Concentric AI, where he led global sales, and brings more than two decades of enterprise cybersecurity experience, including leadership roles at CrowdStrike, Proofpoint, and AccessData.
The numbers: The $25 million round brought Abstract's total funding to nearly $50 million and was completed at three times its previous valuation. At the time, the company reported annual recurring revenue growth of 380%, net revenue retention of 264%, and a customer base that had tripled.
What's the endgame? Founded in 2023, Abstract sells a composable security operations platform built to move enterprises away from monolithic security information and event management (SIEM) architectures. Its streaming-first design runs detections directly in the data stream and routes information into the destinations customers already use, with AI features delivered through its Astro AI product.
Why now? Abstract argues enterprises want more control over their security data, AI strategy, and infrastructure economics than a single-vendor SIEM allows. A dedicated revenue chief adds the commercial infrastructure to sell that pitch to larger enterprises and expand channel and customer success operations.
"They're not trying to build a better version of the old SIEM model — they're building what comes next," Eller said.
The signal: Rising volumes of security data and the spread of AI in the security operations centre are pressuring architectures designed decades ago. Abstract's raise, growth figures, and senior hire show investor appetite for challengers positioning against the incumbent SIEM model.
