Single Cell Discoveries buys TATAA Biocenter to span discovery to clinic

What's the endgame? SCD wants to move a molecular target from discovery through to a validated, regulatory-ready result in-house. SCD contributes single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, high-throughput RNA sequencing, bioinformatics, and multi-omics; TATAA adds qPCR, dPCR, proteomics, sequencing, and GLP/GCLP-compliant bioanalysis. A target flagged by single-cell sequencing can now be confirmed and developed into a validated assay without the samples or data leaving the group.

Why now? Chief executive officer Mauro Muraro said customers "loved working with us on discovery but had to go elsewhere to validate targets for a clinical program." He framed the deal as a response to sponsors consolidating outsourcing around fewer partners.

What changes for customers? Little, in the near term. Projects, teams, workflows, and quality systems continue unchanged, and TATAA keeps operating from Gothenburg with the same scientists. The new option is extending a program across both organisations, with combined services available from September 2026.

Sofia Adolfsson, scientific officer at TATAA, said its GLP/GCLP-compliant assay development can now validate SCD's findings "without customers switching providers, protocols, or data formats partway through a program." Judith Vivie, chief operating officer, and Muraro will lead the combined business.

The signal: The deal reflects a broader push by drug developers to shrink their vendor lists and hand more of the development pathway to single partners. By stitching discovery-grade omics to regulated validation, SCD is betting that the messy handover between the two stages — a point where, in Muraro's words, "fragmentation costs sponsors the most time" — is where a specialist CRO can carve out an edge.
