Beacon lands $20M to bridge Canada-India cross-border finance
What's the deal? Toronto-based fintech Beacon has closed an oversubscribed $20 million early-stage round to expand its cross-border financial services between Canada and India. The round was led by Beacon's existing investors, with participation from new backers.
Why now? The raise follows a sharp growth spurt: Beacon says it doubled its user base in seven days while spending just $11,000 on advertising, reaching the top spot in Apple's App Store.
What's the endgame? Founded in 2023 by Stuart Szabo and Aditya Mhatre, Beacon set out to ease the financial and logistical hurdles immigrants face when moving to Canada. It now positions itself more broadly as a cross-border fintech connecting the two countries.
Mhatre said Beacon was created to replace the multiple apps, identity-verification processes and phone numbers people often need to manage remittances, banking, investments and international payments.
Where the money goes: The capital will fund user growth, new financial services in both markets, and an integrated platform for managing money across borders. Beacon also plans to grow its team and teased a major product launch aimed at the Indian diaspora.
The backstory: Beacon previously raised a $5.25 million seed round in 2024, backed by Jawl Residential GroupDealroom has a profile for this one. Its product suite now includes Beacon Money, a digital wallet for newcomers, and Beacon Remit, which lets users send money from India to Canada in one app.
The signal: Migration corridors are becoming a fintech battleground, and Beacon is betting that consolidating fragmented banking, remittance, and identity tools into a single app will win over one of the world's largest diasporas.
