PayNearMe buys Marr Labs to embed agentic AI in payments

What's the deal? PayNearMe, a fintech that processes more than $50 billion in payments annually, has acquired the technology assets of AI startup Marr LabsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and hired its key employees. The deal folds Marr Labs' agentic AI expertise into PayNearMe's PayXM platform, which more than 20,000 businesses use to manage payments.

What each side brings: Founded in 2009, PayNearMe pioneered what it calls Payment Experience Management, handling the payment journey from request through reconciliation. Marr Labs, founded in 2023 and backed by Y Combinator, built agentic AI to automate voice, messaging, and workflows in regulated environments, supporting millions of customer interactions monthly across financial services firms.

The key hire: The Marr Labs team joins PayNearMe, bringing experience that includes work on technology behind early Siri products. Co-founder and CEO Dave Grannan and co-founder and CTO Han Shu are among those making the move.

What's the endgame? PayNearMe wants to embed AI agents directly into PayXM rather than run them as a bolt-on. "AI provides powerful opportunities to further improve the experience delivered by our PayXM platform," said Danny Shader, founder and chief executive officer of PayNearMe.

Why now? Grannan framed the move as a chance to scale. "We've spent years building AI that can work reliably at scale, and wanted to put that experience to work where it could have the greatest impact," he said.

What could go wrong? Payments are heavily regulated, and AI agents must act within compliance rules. Shu noted that agents "need access to the right data, business rules and workflows" and must operate reliably while keeping a natural conversational experience.

The signal: The deal reflects how established fintechs are buying, not building, AI talent to bake automation into their platforms. For PayNearMe, embedding agents across the payment journey is a bet that AI becomes core infrastructure rather than an add-on.
