Microsoft grants $5M to expand ALERTCalifornia wildfire detection AI

What's the endgame? Microsoft's AI for Good Lab is working with ALERTCalifornia to sharpen its wildfire detection and expand the system. The aim is to give firefighters more time to respond by spotting smoke and fires before they reach emergency services.
How it works: ALERTCalifornia runs a network of more than 1,300 high-definition cameras across fire-prone areas, each rotating 360 degrees roughly every two minutes. The AI analyses the images continuously, distinguishing likely fire activity from clouds, fog, or shifting light before staff verify each alert.

Why now? California wildfires are getting harder to manage as communities expand into fire-prone areas and hot, dry spells grow more extreme. Early detection matters most when fires begin in remote terrain, where a blaze might otherwise go unnoticed until someone spots the smoke.
By the numbers: In its first season, the system detected more than 1,200 fires and identified incidents before a 911 call over 30% of the time. Microsoft says the technology now processes more than seven million images a day and can flag some fires up to 2.5 hours before the first 911 call.
In August 2023, the technology supported the response to the Trotter Fire in Kern County, which was contained at 52 acres.
The signal: At $5m, this grant sits in the upper tier of funding for its type, reflecting how far climate-tech and public-safety AI have moved from pilot to infrastructure. The value is not that AI replaces firefighters, but that it hands them earlier, better information for the incidents they already face.
