Dragonfly buys Modern Data Stack to fuel its £2.6M AI intelligence bet

What's the deal? DragonflyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a technology intelligence platform, has acquired Modern Data StackDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → (MDS), the online community and knowledge hub that documented the rise of the modern data stack. Terms were not disclosed.

What each side brings: MDS runs a directory of more than 500 data tools, real-world stack breakdowns, a newsletter that ran beyond 100 editions, a podcast, and the RocketShip Awards. Its 25,000 followers and subscribers now join Dragonfly, whose knowledge graph tracks more than 300,000 software vendors.

What changes: Dragonfly takes ownership of the moderndatastack.xyz domain, content archive, newsletter, and social channels. The site will redirect to Dragonfly, and MDS subscribers keep a newsletter — now broadened from data tooling to the whole technology stack.

The rationale: Dragonfly says the modern data stack showed what happens when one function's tooling is mapped, benchmarked, and chosen deliberately. It wants to apply that rigour across every function for the AI era.

Why now? The deal is Dragonfly's second major announcement in three weeks, following a strong first year. It launched publicly in October 2025 with a £2.6M pre-seed round led by Episode 1 and has since published an AI Readiness Framework.

"The data stack was the first part of the business stack to get properly mapped, categorised and benchmarked," said Sven Sabas, co-founder and co-chief executive officer at Dragonfly. "You don't become AI-ready by buying AI tools. You become AI-ready by changing how work flows through your company."

What's the endgame? Dragonfly is building a community section and resource hub on its platform, extending MDS's approach with white papers, articles, stack breakdowns, and podcasts covering the full technology stack.

The signal: The acquisition reflects how AI is reshaping the software tooling market — the same demand for independent, vendor-neutral guidance that defined the data era is now spreading across every business function.
