Kerno buys Scan Simple to add barcode labeling for product makers

What does Scan Simple do? The platform solves a checkout problem for products that cannot be represented by a standard, fixed-quantity barcode. Users scan or enter a master UPC or SKU, specify a quantity or measurement, generate an order-specific code and render a barcode label for local printing.
Its target users are retailers selling items by weight, length, count or custom size — fabric stores selling cut yardage, specialty-food shops selling by weight, or businesses handling rope, ribbon, cable, flooring or paper.
What's the endgame? The deal extends Kerno beyond its core production-management software, which manages materials, formulas, packaging, batches, quality control, finished goods, costing and inventory. Kerno plans to connect approved finished-goods records with label creation and printing, while remaining the system of record for product data.
Why keep them separate? Scan Simple stays available as a standalone product, letting Kerno build connections between the two systems without forcing existing customers onto a broader manufacturing platform.
“Acquiring Scan Simple gives Kerno a proven foundation for making barcode labeling and finished-goods workflows easier for product businesses,” said Kerno chief executive officer and co-founder Michael D. Savino. “Instead of beginning with a concept, we are building from a live platform developed around a real checkout problem.”
No live integration launches with the acquisition. Kerno said integration details, compatibility, timing and availability will follow once new capabilities are developed and verified.
