China's CXMT hits advanced memory milestone weeks after $8.6B IPO

What's the deal? ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), China's leading memory-chip maker, has begun small-scale production of HBM3E, an advanced type of high-bandwidth memory used in leading AI processors. The milestone comes weeks after the company raised $8.6 billion in a Shanghai IPO. It leaves CXMT just one generation behind the world's top manufacturers.

Why now? Demand for high-bandwidth memory has never been more intense, driven by the AI boom. US export restrictions bar Chinese companies from buying the most advanced HBM from Western firms — one of the biggest constraints on China's homegrown AI chip designers.

The IPO: CXMT's Shanghai listing raised $8.6 billion to expand production and improve its technology. The offering was a hit with Chinese investors, with shares soaring 472% in their debut.

By the numbers: The company said on Friday that first-half revenue rose almost tenfold to 150.3 billion yuan ($22.3 billion). Net income reached 77.6 billion yuan ($11.5 billion), reversing a year-earlier loss. CXMT did not mention its HBM progress in the earnings release.

What's the endgame? Founded with local government backing in 2016, CXMT is a centrepiece of Beijing's push for chip self-reliance. It has grown into the world's fourth-largest producer of DRAM and plans to expand HBM output in 2027.

The product: HBM stacks memory chips close to a processor, letting data move rapidly between them — essential for training and running large AI models. Chinese designers including Alibaba's T-HeadDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Cambricon Technologies are testing CXMT's memory, and could use it in products as early as next year. Those orders could give CXMT the production experience it needs to scale.

What could go wrong? CXMT remains three to five years behind leaders SamsungDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, SK HynixDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and MicronDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. Its manufacturing is also constrained by US restrictions blocking access to some of the most sophisticated foreign equipment, and advanced HBM is far harder to make than conventional DRAM.

The signal: With the three leading manufacturers racing to fill orders from Nvidia, GoogleDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and other developers, CXMT's entry could ease a major bottleneck for China's tech industry. But Washington's controls still cap how far and how fast it can go.
