Who's Zacua? Founded in 2022 by Vivin Hegde, Zacua Ventures invests in technology aimed at transforming the world's built environment. It leans on a global network to support startups tackling labour shortages, ageing infrastructure, productivity, and sustainability.
Why now? Toda has been building its startup strategy since 2020, when it set up a dedicated value co-creation unit and a ringfenced investment budget. The company says it has reviewed information on more than 3,500 startups worldwide and shared over 730 collaboration opportunities with internal teams.
What's the endgame? Toda has previously backed 17 startups and eight VC funds. The Zacua investment is meant to strengthen its search for advanced overseas technology and build ties with companies leading built-environment tech.
The signal: Japanese incumbents in slow-moving sectors like construction are increasingly using VC funds as a window into global innovation — trading capital for a view of emerging technology trends they can then bring in-house.
