Abacus Data buys Manitoba's Probe Research to build its Prairie base
What's the deal? Ottawa-based Abacus Data has acquired Manitoba's Probe Research, absorbing its full team and client base. The public opinion and market research firm announced the deal Thursday. Terms were not disclosed.
What each firm does: Abacus Data, founded in Ottawa in 2010, researches Canadian public opinion, consumer behaviour, and workplace culture. Probe Research has spent 30 years supplying data and analysis to businesses, governments, and organisations across the Prairies.
What changes: Probe principals Curtis Brown and Mary Agnes Welch will stay on and become Abacus shareholders. Brown becomes vice-president and managing director of Western operations; Welch takes on vice-president of qualitative research and chief of talent and culture. Probe's office and team remain in place as its brand transitions to Abacus over the coming months.
The expansion: The deal makes Winnipeg Abacus's base in the Prairies as it grows across Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Abacus already operates offices in Toronto, Halifax, and Winnipeg, and serves as pollster for the Toronto StarDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.
What's the endgame? Founder and chief executive officer David Coletto framed the purchase as the next chapter in Abacus's growth. "Abacus Data has never been in higher demand, and this acquisition is about meeting that demand from coast to coast," he said. He called Probe "the gold standard for research in the Prairie region."
The client angle: Probe's clients keep the same local team while gaining access to Abacus's national research infrastructure, regular national surveys, and its wider bench of researchers, strategists, and analysts. "We're not going anywhere. We're growing," Brown said.
The signal: The acquisition points to consolidation in Canadian market research, as national platforms absorb respected regional shops to knit together coast-to-coast coverage. For Abacus, adding a 30-year Prairie brand fills a geographic gap; for Probe, it trades independence for national reach and deeper capacity.
