PLD Space wins €158.9M ESA award, capping a year of expansion
What's the deal? Spanish space transportation company PLD Space has been awarded €158.9 million by the European Space Agency (ESA)Dealroom has a profile for this one. What's the endgame? Founded in 2011 in Elche, PLD Space builds reusable rockets to carry satellites and people into orbit. The award covers two components: consolidating its MIURA 5 commercial launch service and ramping up flight cadence to 2030, and developing enhanced payload capacity and propulsive landing capabilities as a step toward reusability.
Those upgrades feed into MIURA Next, the company's planned family of heavy launchers. Key subsystems are being engineered for direct transfer to future vehicles, cutting technical risk.
Why now? The grant caps a busy year for PLD Space. It closed a €180 million Series C in March, secured a €30 million European Investment Bank venture-debt facility in April, and landed a €35 million investment for its launch complex at the Guiana Space Centre.
What's the significance? The award ranks among the largest grants ever recorded for a Spanish space company. "ESA's selection of PLD Space confirms the maturity of the roadmap we have been building for years," said executive president Ezequiel Sánchez.
He framed the contract as one stage in a longer path: "from demonstrating our technology with MIURA 1, to proving orbital capability with MIURA 5 [...] and ultimately transferring those critical technologies to MIURA Next."
The signal: Capital is flooding into European SpaceTech. EU-Startups has tracked roughly €672.5 million in closed financings across the sector in 2026, including €450 million for Finland's ICEYE and €61 million for Switzerland's SWISSto12. As access to space becomes a marker of strategic autonomy, Europe is rebuilding its launch landscape around resilience and independence — and PLD Space is positioning itself at the centre of that shift.
